Grade 5 or 6 RCM Theory Camp

July 23-27 2019 (9:00-11:30 am)

For anyone working at a grade 4, 5 or 6 piano level (contact Chelsea for special exceptions)

$250+cost of grade 5 or 6 theory book

You never knew theory could be this fun!

Join Chelsea as we learn the grade 5 (and most of the grade 6) theory curriculum through teaching, games, group activities and hands on learning.

We’ll use practice examinations and have personal instruction, and students will leave the week prepared and confident to write their RCM Level 5 or 6 Theory exam (not mandatory!).

This is a great choice to free up more lesson time for repertoire, or to not have to bump up lesson time to 45 or 60 minutes in the higher grades (theory will be already done!).

Learn to Chord Basic

august 5-9 2019 (9:00-11:30 am)

Minimum 3 years piano experience required (contact Chelsea to see if this is for your student)

Does your student want to learn how to play in a church worship band in a contemporary context? Do they want to be able to play chords to famous pop songs from chord charts they find on the internet? Do they want to play along with their friends on ukulele or guitar?

During this week, we’ll explore chords, rhythm patterns, principles of playing in band. We’ll learn to read chord charts and lead sheets and explore by playing a variety of songs together. We’ll be amazed at how music theory becomes easy when using chords to improvise songs and melodies together.

Students will also get to play in a group with other instruments and will come away able to interpret and play basic versions of lead sheets and chord charts, allowing them to research and learn songs on their own based on chord charts. Students will also learn how to pick parts that fit well in a band setting and have fun ‘jamming’ together.

Learning to Chord Intermediate/Advanced

August 12-16 2019 (9:00-11:30 am)

For anyone who has a basic understanding of chording and can play fluently through a chord chart (those who have taken the chording camp before or have some previous experience)

There’s always more to learn when it comes to chording...like what about those weird minor seventh or dominant seventh chords? What kind of rhythm patterns can we use? How can we use both the melody and the chords to work together? What about improvising a melody line or transposing! There are so many possibilities when you know how to Chord, and this camp is about exploring them all.

Students will come away analyzing common chord progressions, creating arrangements of their favourite songs, and feeling confident to read chord charts of various styles (lead sheets, chord charts, and Nashville number system).

Rocking Rhythms, Impressive Improvising and Creative Composing!

August 5-9, 2019 (9:00-11:30 am)

Ages 7-12 (contact Chelsea for special exceptions)

Join Mrs. Chelsea as we cover a little bit of everything that it takes to be creative composers!

In a fun and engaging environment, students will explore rhythm patterns with games, pieces and rhythm instruments. We will improvise (make up music together), learning some of the basics principles of music and composing.

Students will explore some famous composers and complete their own composition project throughout the week and have an official transcribed piece of music by the end of the week.

***All camps require a minimum of 3 students and will have a maximum of 8 students.***

Summer piano lesson packages are also available. You can purchase a package of 2 lessons ($50), 4 lessons ($95) or 6 lessons ($135). Lessons can be redeemed anytime between June 25 and August 30, 2019.
